On Thursday the US reported over 77,000 new cases of COVID-19. Dr Peter Hotez said today that by next Week we could be averaging in excess of 80,000 new cases per day. Dr. Hotez is Dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine and Professor of Pediatrics and Molecular Virology & Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine. He went on to say that by February without taking immediate remedial steps the US death count could be in excess of 430,000 and counting.
Last night during the Presidential debate DJT told an audience of millions that the US had turned the corner. It was bad enough that he lied to the American public about the nature of the disease from the very beginning. It is like committing wholesale homicide to tell people that the danger is subsiding and that we should learn to live with it.
I met a friend for lunch today. My friend is a banker. He told me something very revealing. He shared with me that while the banks are anticipating a growing number of home foreclosures for the housing market at the $350,000 point or less.their seeing a silver lining. He said the market for million dollar plus mortgages hasn’t been this robust in decades. The banks exposure is on the low end, not the high end.
I asked how that could be and he explained that the economic instability wasn’t really impacting those making $400,000 and above. The financial community is bracing itself for a repeat of the 2008 mortgage crisis at the low end. They believe that the top end will balance losses on the low end.
This tells me that all those dumb— politicians who are more interested in opening the country up are more concerned with the pocketbooks of the wealthy than they are with the health and welfare of their constituents.
Until we as a nation accept the reality of what COVID-19 means things are only going to get worse. The longer this virus ravages the population the more dire things become. Thus far we’ve dodged the bullet of the virus mutating. However the longer it continues to spread the more likely the opportunity for mutation becomes.
America needs leadership that is prepared to deal with a crisis. Trump never was and never will be. Time to give him the permanent vacation he so urgently needs.
