Well this morning the talking heads are all abuzz about the fall of Afghanistan. For the life of me I can’t understand how or why anyone would be surprised. We’ve seen this 🎬 movie before. In fact some of us lived it up close and personal.
I’m going to generalize and say that Afghanistan is very much like Vietnam. The primary difference is the US death toll from each of these fiascos. Each was an American exercise in nation building to confirm the American notion of Democracy. In both we spent huge sum of money and destroyed thousands of lives.
The only real beneficiary was the US military industrial complex. As a veteran I no longer buy the premise that we were going in to save people. I now think that the influence of an industry that makes its money from building and developing tools of war played a huge part in our presence in both of these sovereign nations. I’m not a dove and I will always support our military. I’m in the autumn of my life now and I see things a little more clearly. I’m thankful everyday that my son never entered the military. I’m thankful that he will never know the trauma of battle. My heart breaks for every mother or father who as lost a child for something that didn’t mean anything.
I’m fervently praying that we learn something from this.
