A window of opportunity is defined as a period of time during which some action can be taken that will achieve a desired outcome. We have a window of opportunity that is closing fast. Under the Trump administration the United States withdrew from the Paris accord on climate.
Here are some facts that you need to understand. In the next 10 years the earth will experience an environmentally altering shortage of fresh water. This shortage will impact every nation in the world. Trumps rollback of EPA regulations on dumping into fresh water streams and tributaries threatens to exacerbate the issue for the United States.
Approximately 84 % of the US surface fresh water resource is found in the Great Lakes.
We have five states that face imminent water crisis right now. They are New Mexico, California, Arizona, Colorado, and Nebraska. By 2025 more US states will be water challenged.
We continue to avoid dealing with our over dependence on fossil fuels to our detriment. The carbon foot print has a direct correlation to the depletion of the ozone layer. The ozone layer plays a direct role in protecting the earth and its inhabitants from harmful Sun exposure. Just this spring the polar region saw its largest growth of ozone depletion. The result of this depletion is evidenced in the accelerated melting of the polar shelf and the rise of ocean levels caused by the melt off.
There are likely direct health implications of the ozone layer. We are likely to see increasing levels of melanoma caused by exposure to harmful rays from the Sun. Over time rising Oceanic levels will have a direct impact on low lying areas of the US adjacent to our oceans.
The window of opportunity for addressing these things is roughly ten years. If we fail to do so human life on this planet will face threats that we have never known before. Water driven Wars could be a real possibility. We either evolve or we perish.
The next President must be prepared to aggressively tackle these realities. The time for sticking our head in the sand and pretending that there is no problem is over.
Trump is not equipped for the job. His past performance clearly demonstrates that he lacks the discipline and focus that the task demands. He can’t get the job done.
