The Russian economy is less than 2 trillion dollars annually. Conversely the US economy is slightly less than 25 trillion annually. That’s a huge difference. Right now the Russians have plus or minus 100,000 troops posed on the border of the Ukraine πΊπ¦. How is it possible that Vladimir Putin would feel comfortable opposing the US with the possibility of major economic sanctions?
It’s possible because the Russian effort to destabilize the US political environment has been successful beyond their wildest dreams. The US was never united but we managed to present what appeared to be a very solid facade. The Russians penetrated that facade very adeptly leading up to the Presidential election in 2016. They found all of the cracks and exploited them. They recognized that there was an element in this country willing to trade democracy for power and they took advantage of them. They recognized that inspire of our protestations we remained a racially devided people.
The division and racial animus have threatened to lead to a full scale civil war. The Russians understand the numbers. The US military headcount for active personnel is in the neighborhood of 1.4 million men and women. If we were to experience civil war on our own shores we would be hard pressed to maintain a presence anywhere else in the world. What makes thing even more problematic is the hidden insurgency within our own military and law enforcement ranks.
The USN just announced that they are adding an additional two weeks to boot camp to deal with the area of character and fitness. Our military services are beginning to acknowledge that there is a problem that needs to be addressed. Our law enforcement agencies have not acknowledged the same problem. Currently we’re spending upwards of 800 billion on defense spending. Wouldn’t it be ironic if the results of that spending were leveled at US citizens.
The Russians aren’t afraid of US economic sanctions because they view the US as a paper tiger. The Trump Presidency saw US international influence degraded. Our allies and partners around the π world may not be willing to back the US in imposing economic sanctions against Russia.
The Russians spend less than 10% of the US budget for defense. They’ve made a shift to cyberattacks while we still provide maximum return to the defense industry.
We are in the midst of a perfect storm. We have domestic unrest growing. We have cyber attacks that go unchecked and unanswered. Couple that would a refusal to acknowledge the seriousness of our domestic issues and you have a powder keg threatening to blow democracy to smithereens.
The Russians are playing chess while we play checkers. We need to take urgent action in this country to root out the leaders of this insurgency. Every day that passes with the Jan. 6th commission and the DOJ not taking strong remedial action pushes us closer the the abyss. Time is not on our side. Nikita Khrushchev’s chilling prediction: ‘We will take America without firing a shot’. It just took a little longer than he expected.
