Everyday I become more convinced that there is no saving this country. This morning Paul Hodgkins was sentenced to 8 months for his role in the January 6th insurrection attempt in Washington DC. If the court was looking to send a message it succeeded. The message was loud and clear. There are no consequences if you belong to the privileged class for participating in an attempt to violently over throw the government.
What Mr. Hodgkins got was misdemeanor time. It wasn’t a slap on the wrist, it was a love tap. It might have gotten a tougher sentence for drunk driving.
I’m wondering if the next time someone charged with felony murder can expect leniency if this was their first offense or they didn’t pull the trigger.
How in the world 🌎 could anyone think that handing out a sentence like this would do anything to restore order. This is travesty and does not bode well for what people can expect to see other sentences look like. If this was meant to serve as a deterrent for other like minded insurrectionist it was a coloss failure.
We keep making the same mistake and we keep paying for it. One hundred and fifty six years after the end of the Civil War we still have people who shout that the South shall rise again.
When Hitler failed in his beer hall putsch he was sentenced to 5 years and served only 9 months. Instead of being deterred he was inspired to do it again. Millions of people paid with their lives. Are millions of Americans going to have to pay with their lives because we failed once again to deal with people who have no allegiance to the nation.
