I remember South Africa prior to the power change ushered in by Nelson Mandela. I remember the extreme suppression tactics of the Afrikaans regime in South Africa. I remember the Government sanctioned murders of ANC leaders that occurred for decades.
I remember that when Nelson Mandela came to leadership he wanted to focus on reconciliation rather than retribution. Out of that desire for reconciliation came the Truth and Reconciliation Commision. The purpose of the commision was twofold. First to lay out the truth of Afrikaaner operation and secondly to find a path forward to live in peace as one nation. I remember.
Like South Africa the United States as an ugly past of wholesale oppression. We have approached equality in fits and starts for over 155 years and rather than moving forward we appear to be regressing. It makes you wonder who the self appointed greatest nation in the world isn’t further ahead. It makes you wonder why we have never entertained the value of a Truth and Reconciliation Commision of our own. A journey of a thousand miles begins with but a single step. When will that single step come??
