Today the District Attorney in the inquiry into the death of Andrew Brown put his entire hand on the scales of justice. Watching the press conference it was clear that this man had a decision in mind before looking with clear eyes at all the facts. Basically he said that the police are entitled to summarily execute a suspect no matter what the level of actual threat they may be facing. The George Floyd case didn’t change a thing.
Admittedly it’s been awhile since I was a cop but I still have cops eyes. This was an absolutely avoidable homicide and I’m going to take you through it.
The suspect was in his car. The take down team could have remained out of view and taken him into custody once he left his vehicle. These guys weren’t interested in arresting him without incident. They came prepared for war not an arrest. Cops can have a tendency to be cowboys. The three who fired on Andrew Brown can rightfully be classified as cowboys. They came for blood.
Watching the body cam video I thought back to my days in the police academy. 19 weeks of training in basic criminal law, firearms training, physical training, vehicle pursuit you can figure out the rest. The one thing I don’t remember is any training in empathy. If we got it there wasn’t much of it. How do you put someone out on the streets after 19 weeks and not invest in instructing them in empathy? The guys who shot Andrew Brown didn’t kill him because they had no choice, they killed him because he was a trophy attempting to escape from them. To them he wasn’t human, he was just another black man who the world wouldn’t mourn and would be chalked up as just another bad guy. THEY HAD NO EMPATHY! The band played on.
