I’m not necessarily a big Bill Maher fan however last night I watched his show. The subject of woke culture came up and I must say I found it viscerally offensive. Bill went on a tirade about things not being as bad as people make them out to be.

He mentioned the Massacre at Greenwood and he said that a hundred years later we don’t have that happening anymore. His comments illustrated something that we as black Americans are forced to deal with everyday. The mantra of things will get better. If you are a black, Asian, Hispanic, or any group other than white you know how hollow that promise rings.

How long does it take to treat everyone like a human being? It’s far easier to say that things will get better when you are the author of the statement rather than the people waiting for the change to come.

I have to tell you that I don’t believe it. I don’t believe that people who are trying to pass hundreds of new voter suppression laws have any intention of things changing. I don’t think that groups like the three percenters, the Oath Keepers, the Proud Boys and the myriad of others are going to have some miraculous epiphany and join the people who don’t fit into their definition of American and sing kumbaya.

America is the story of what could have been. Think about the generations of talent that we have allowed to stagnate and go to waste purely out of a desire to keep others subservient. America as not changed. No matter how much you cajole, appease, or attempt to reassure those 74,000,000 people who voted for Trump they will never accept the premise that equity for all does not take something from them.

Far too many Americans convinced themselves that once Trump was gone that things would be okay. They underestimated the nature of hate and grievance whether real or imagined. Every boogie man that you could possibly imagine as been pulled out of the closet and dusted off to justify the dismantling of every Democratic principle that was ever espoused.

The idea of social equity and responsibility as been turned into communist socialism. Human equality is now viewed as replacement. Avarice and a desire to concentrate power have taken hold. The public should be clamoring for a comprehensive infrastructure program yet remains eerily silent. The question before us is whether the nation will go the way of prior failed nations or rise from the ashes like a Phoenix to defy fate. I don’t believe it.
