These Are The Days Of Our Lives
If I’ve learned anything about this Country I’ve come to understand how much we like bright and shiny things. Yesterday according to the media and the talking heads the Supreme Coymurt deliver what is being described as a landmark decision. The Supreme Court issued a ruling that fully extended the protections of the 1964 act to the LGTBQ community. With much fanfare the ruling was seen as a repudiation of declared White House policy
I’m a child of the Brown v. Board of Education ruling. That ruling was intended to settle the question of separate but equal and fully integrate public education. It looked good on paper and people heralded it as the dawning of a new day. Eisenhower didn’t agree with the decision and he did very little initially to aid its implementation. Eventually he agreed to send federal troops in to protect children in the south. The operative word was eventually. The Supreme Court deemed its work to be done. To fully understand the failure of Brown v Board of Education all one need do is look at how public education as failed black and Brown children. How educational funding remains woefully unequal between black and white communities. We do however have a landmark Supreme Court decision.
Yesterday’s decision is another bright and shiny thing. It will accomplish nothing without a will to back it up with full enforcement. Don’t fall for bright and shiny things.
Today #BunkerbitchakaDJT is suppose to issue an executive order aimed at providing a measure of police reform. No one yet knows what will be in this “executive order” but we can all be confident that it is another bright and shiny thing. The #BunkerbitchakaDJT as been clear that as the so called law and order President he stands on the side of repressive policing. He believes in a society where the role of the police is to keep the people compliant.
The executive order will be a bright and shiny thing to thwart rather than aid police reform. If #BunkerbitchakaDJT had his way the police would be goose stepping in American streets. At a time of growing national unrest another black man died at the hands of Americas police for a minor infraction. When asked about the death of Rayshard Brooks #BunkerbitchakaDJT said it was a bad situation and that he had studied it thoroughly. To that I say bull—-.
Our growing national unrest will not be quelled by a Presidential executive order. This bright and shiny thing will not work. The genie is out of the bottle and will not be put back. These are the days of our lives.
