On Wednesday night Republican Senator Tim Scott in his rebuttal said that America is not a racist country. Scott got a lot of heat about that comment.

The next day Vice President Kamala Rice was asked if she thought that America is a racist country. Her response was that she does not think America is a racist country.

I posted a comment posing the question of what could she have possibly been thinking. Now as you might imagine the responses were quick and defensive.

I wouldn’t have made a good politician. I believe in integrity and character. You don’t compromise those things out of political expediency.

I believe that if you’re going to lead you must be willing to share uncomfortable truths. Some people will find it uncomfortable but America is a racist nation. That doesn’t mean that everyone is a racist. It means that a careful unjaundiced view of America will tell you unequivocally that America is a racist nation.

How else do you explain the 3/5’s rule? How do you explain the necessity of a 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment? How do you explain the US Supreme Court ripping the guts out of the 1866 Civil Rights Act? How do you explain Jim Crow? How do you explain the Chinese Imigration act of 1882? How do you explain Plessy v. Ferguson and seperate but equal? How do you explain the strange fruit that was a hallmark of the south? How do you explain the fact that US military branches remained segregated until Truman order the military to integrate. I’m a Navy vet and until 1942 there was only one rating that was open to black seaman. That being ships steward/messman, in other words butler. There were no black officers in the US Navy until the grand experiment with the Golden 13 in 1944. How do you explain the need for the Civil Rights act of 1964? How do you explain the need for the Voting Rights act of 1965 and the US Supreme Court gutting that act in 2013. I could go on but undoubtedly there will be people who want to say that things have changed.

Fair enough, they’ve change so much that at this very moment 31 states have legislation pending to make voting harder. Things have changed so much that just a few years ago acgroup of white men were parading around Charlottesville Virginia chanting we will not be replaced. Things have changed so much that #MitchtheBitch didn’t caucus with his Republican counterparts to Hatch a plan to make Barack Obama a one term President.

Things haven’t changed, they just have a different mask. At the end of the second world War the Germans passed a law to forbid the display of the Nazi swastika. Our Civil War ended in 1865 yet confederate statues and the confederate battle flag still fly.

So if you need to tell yourself that America is not a racist nation to feel good you’re part of the problem. You’re like the patient who gets a diagnosis and refuses to qccept it. AMERICA IS A RACIST NATION!! Are you ready to fix it???
