We’re living in interesting times. We are bearing witness to the worldwide decline of Democratic principals and the rise of autocracy around the world. Resistance to autocracy as always required that people be willing to actively fight against it.
The nature of that fight may require a use of force. In our own country we were always at risk of devolving into to a autocracy. When our Constitution was written the founders recognized that the day might come when a strongman found his way to the Presidency. They hoped that the guardrails that had been created would be enough to stop an autocracy from tumbling their Democratic Republic. They assumed that the separation of powers and the three separate branches of government would create balance. What they did not anticipate was the compromise of the independence of the Legislative and Judicial branches by the Executive branch.
They knew that political parties could pose a threat to the delicate balance but they did nothing to prevent their creation and ascendancy. From the time of its inception until now the Constitution as never been made to incorporate greater protections from rogue actors.
In many ways our form of government as fallen victim to a metastasized foem of Capitalism that concentrated more and more wealth in the hands of a few at the expense of the masses.
How does one logically explain how 74,000,000 million citizens vote to install a hyper narcissistic grifter to the Presidency? In order to do so we first must be willing to take the blinders off. The US was never a melting pot. It was always a nation with its own self imposed caste structure. In spite of the addition of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments the caste structure of the US as always placed the interest of the social construct of whiteness above everyone else.
While the people did not have the desire or will to change this shifting global demographics will. For those citizens who long for the US of the 40’s and 50’s that demographic shift is more than alarming. It is in fact a bridge to far for them. They have decided that the preservation of the caste system is more important than the notion of the melting pot. When the would be strongman came along and told them that he would preserve the status quo they didn’t care about democracy anymore. They cared about being the sole group with power.
As we spend time this week wringing our hands about what is evolving in Afghanistan let us remember that this did not happen in a vacuum. Our own would be strongman wanted to invite the Taliban to camp David to negotiate the deal. From all appearances it looks like one of the prisoners he agreed to release will be Afghanistans new Strongman leader.
It may be too late to stop this madness in our country. I frankly don’t know if we have the will to do so. When the epitaph is written on the tombstone it will say “Here lie the ashes of the great experiment. Killed by avarice and the conceit of American exceptionalism”.
