Today was the one year anniversary of the plot against America. I decided to watch a limited series from HBO from a couple of years ago based on a book written by Phillip Roth. The limited series was aptly titled the Plot Against America. The story takes place in a fictional 30’s and 40’s America.

The America of the story is mired in white nationalism. America’s hero of the late 20’s, Charles Lindbergh somehow manages to beat FDR in the Presidential election. In reality Lindbergh was rumored to be a a nazi sympathizer and anti-semantic in his views. What’s interesting is that Lindbergh refused to fight in World War II.

The story is about the slow but steady death of Democratic principles. America is becoming an autocracy. The evolution of the fictional America is uncanny in its resemblance to what we are living now. People in this country still don’t get it. This situation isn’t going to magically resolve itself.

Chuck Schumer is dreaming if he believes that there will positive movement on a voting rights bill by January 17th. Joe Manchin has said in no uncertain terms that he is not prepared to create a work around for a voting rights bill. Without a miracle a voting rights bill in 2022 is dead on arrival. Why is it that Democrats refuse to accept that the system is irretrievably broken?

In the 6th and last episode of The Plot Against America the last ten minutes are riveting. When the votes of the people become irrelevant Democracy dies. Look around you.
