In 1962 Fletcher Knebel and Charles W. Bailey II authored a work of fiction. That book was Seven Days In May. The book dealt with a military- political coup of the government. The premise of the story is that the General who leads the joint chiefs of staff decides that he is better equipped than the President to guide the country. With the aid of fellow officers he plans a coup to overthrow the President.

There are some interesting lessons to be taken from the book. The first and possibly most important lesson is that we should never believe that it can not happen. Currently we have a very surreal situation happening in Washington DC. We have a lame duck President who refuses to accept the results of an election. This President as demonstrated every sign that he intends to resist the will of the people. He is being propped up an goaded on by a retired 3 star General who he pardoned for crimes committed while a part of his administration.

No doubt there will be those that say that Seven Days in May was just a book, it can’t really happen. In the words of Keyser Sozo the greatest trick the devil ever played was convincing mankind that he doesn’t exit.

This threat on the American Government is real. It may even continue beyond the inauguration. The danger facing the nation will not soon go away. Pandoras box as been opened and the ugly side of our nation as spilled out. The question remains what do we do to right the ship?
