Here’s the thing I can understand the Democrats who are saying all or nothing on infrastructure. It’s a choice between a bandaid and real triage.

As a nation we’ve kicked the infrastructure can down the road for so long that we’ve run out of road. A bandaid isn’t going to fix this. For all those politicians wringing their hands about the cost involved there is a simple question to be asked. What’s the cost of not doing a complete job??

We have the opportunity to create millions of new well paying jobs. Those jobs will create thousands of new small community based businesses. Those people and businesses will pay taxes. That’s a win for everybody.

The cynic in me believes that the virulent capitalist in our society don’t want a comprehensive infrastructure program because it would change the balance of power between employees and employers. Millions of new jobs means that potential employees have a choice. The labor market determines the prevailing wage rates rather than the employers. When wage rates are driven by the labor market there is a more equitable distribution of assets. Employers must share the wealth because they no longer have a captive market.

All of the things we claim to be as a nation are within our grasp. We just have to realize that there is no shortage of opportunity. Just a shortage of vision to see what the opportunities could really be if we acted in a way that embraced opportunity for all of us.
