I’ve been stewing about this all day long. I’m finally prepared to put my thoughts into writing.
Yesterday the decision was made to adjourn the house because of threats that there might be another disturbance in Washington DC. That was a mistake and it sent a very bad message. It let the insurrectionist know that they can shut down the lawful government of the nation by just floating threats.
We the people pay our representatives a lot of money. More than a $173,000 dollars a year. In contrast we send thousands of junior enlisted personnel to very dangerous places in the world for less than $2,000.00 a month. They go because they took and oath and it’s their duty. Just because they make less money doesn’t mean they don’t worry about their safety. Worrying doesn’t stop them from doing their job.
For a 173,000 a year the citizens have a right to expect that our representatives do the job. They have now telegraphed to the insurrectionist that they will fold under the threat of fire. We can not have an effective government run that way.
Perhaps our elected representatives might want to review history. Nathan Hale was 22 years old when he gave his life for his country. He had not yet begun to live. Before he was executed his last words were “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”
Patrick Henry said “Give me liberty, or give me death!” These were men that understood that the fight was about something bigger than themselves. They knew that the preservation of the nation required them to show resolve in the face of great personal danger. I expect no less of our professional political class.
What January 6th demonstrated is that our old notions of normal were a thing of the past. Serving the nation will present risk for the foreseeable future. We can not have governance dominated by fear. We must root out the traitors and deal with each and everyone of them without the constraint of mercy.
While we have yet to have a state of the union address it must occur and it must be soon. If we allow fear to rule the insurrectionist will have won. Based on the testimony of Major General William J. Walker yesterday there are serious questions that need to be answered regarding why National Guard troops were held up for hours after the call for assistance. According to General Walker’s testimony he had his men staged and ready to go when he received the call for assistance. If he had received authorization to proceed his men could have been on seen within 20 minutes.
That means that someone in the military chain of command may have been complicit. Every effort needs to be made to identify and bring to order who ever that may have been.
We don’t pay people a $173,000 a year to play it safe. If they can’t take the heat get out of the kitchen.
