My friend Ronald D. Glotta provided the inspiration for this post. The talking heads were visibly disappointed at the jobs number announced on Thursday. The number wasn’t the million that the pundits had been projecting. Just for giggles do some research and find out just how many times in the last 20 years US jobs reports have reported a million new jobs in a single month.
Last year when this pandemic began there were a lot of people who realized that things had changed. The idea that things would revert back to the way they once were is a fools dream. Employers discovered that they really didn’t need people making that daily trek into the office. Fewer employees meant a smaller investment in office space. That smaller investment would ultimately cascade throughout the entire business community. Things are never going back to the way they once were. Jobs will come back but not at the rate of a million jobs per month.
The types of jobs will change. We are on the cusp of a major shift in the automobile industry. The slow but steady shift from vehicles with combustible engines to electric power trains will mean fewer assembly line workers. The nature of the work will change.
The impending changes we are going to experience in our need for labor means we have adjustments to make. These changes make the passage of the American Jobs Act critical. It will usher in millions of new jobs and thousands of new businesses.
We are entering a new era with new challenges and new opportunities. Embrace the future and let go of the past. The jobs are coming we just need to get ready for them.
