What Is A Patriot?
Patriotism is a big topic in America. Since the inception of this country we have venerated those that we view as patriots. Patriotism is defined as the quality of being patriotic; devotion to and vigorous support for one’s country.
“a highly decorated officer of unquestionable integrity and patriotism”. January 6th we saw people launch an attack on the hallowed halls of the capitol in the name of Patriotism. Those people weren’t patriots. They were spoiled selfish people who only care about their agenda.
The indigenous people of America who have loved this country when it did not love them are patriots. When they were removed from their land to make way for settlers they were patriots. When they served in every military conflict since 1900 they were patriots.
The black people who were brought to American shores to work the fields and serve the white masters were patriots. The descendents who took up arms during the Civil War were patriots. The descendents who fought in every military conflict were patriots even when there was a concerted effort to deny their military Valor. Their descendents were patriots when they were denied the same basic human rights afforded those who viewed them as inferior. They were patriots when state after state sought new and more vile ways to deny them access to the polls.
The people of Asian pacific ancestry were patriots when “Americans” landed on their islands to take control. The Japanese were patriots when they were forced into internment camps during World War II while German POW’s brought to the US were not physically constrained.
We’ve equated Patriotism with the social construct of race in this country for far to long. People who March around in their army surplus fatigues with their AR 15’s aren’t patriots. They’re the kids who picked up their marbles and went home when they couldn’t set the rules of the game. Give me the real patriots anytime.
