Truth time. I’ve asked myself what could possibly be motivating the go slow approach of the January 6th committee. Why is their approach so tepid. Today a friend of mine Jan Johnson supplied an answer that I probably couldn’t or wouldn’t see because it was right in front of my face.

The one thing that this whole fiasco has revealed is that Americans have feet of clay perhaps more often than we care to admit. Jan posited that maybe they want to temper what they do because at some point they too might be subject to the same standard of scrutiny that they set in this review. I think that Jan was spot on. I think that we are at a crossroad and that the implications of which path we take are irreversible.

If we deal with what happened on January 6th and the days leading up to it with the idea that no man is above the law we will be setting a precedent that we have given lip service too but never really incorporated in the way we govern.

If we choose the other path we will whitewash it so that those that might transgress in the future are not subject to the full weight of the law and the application of equal justice under the law. We will indeed be codifying a two tier legal system. One for the privileged and one for the masses. We will have transitioned to a fascist oligarchy even if we don’t say it out loud.

Tomorrow the house will vote on contempt charges for Steve Bannon. If the vote let’s him off the hook and does not refer the case to the justice department the die will be cast and the show can come to an end with a whimper.
