Malcolm X was a complex man. His was a story of constant evolution. The path of that evolution was not always smooth.

Malcolm was raised for a period of time in Lansing Michigan. He went to Lansing public schools. He was often the only black child in his class.

Malcolm aspired to be a lawyer but he was told that his aspiration was not realistic. For a period of time this crushed Nalcolms spirit and led him down a path of petty criminality. Incarceration reignited Malcolm’s evolution. He became not just a member of the Black Muslim movement but later a leader, Malcolm was evolving.

If one examines Malcolm’s evolution there is a pattern, a theme. Malcolm allowed other people to have a stronger voice in what he could be than his own. First it was a school advisor and later it was Elijah Mohammad.

When he finally realized that his own voice was more important than anyone else’s in defining who and what he would be they killed him. It makes you wonder what he would have evolved into had he lived.

Never let anyone else’s voice be more important in your evolution than your own.
