Strict constructionist believe that the Constitution can only be interpreted as written. That means that we must use a 18th century view of the world to make decisions about a nuclear world.
I’m curious about American history. I’m curious about the thought processes that were behind our Constitution. In my study of American history one thing becomes crystal clear. The founders knew that our Constitution and Bill of rights were not perfect documents. They fully expected that over time they would evolve with the growth of the nation. Strict Constructionist take the view that the Constitution can only be interpreted as written. The inherent flaw in this logic is apparent throughout the Constitution. One need only look at the Second amendment. If the founders were alive today I dare say that virtually none of them would support the notion that the right to bear arms supports open carry of military style weapons in a civilized society.
The nature of life itself dictates that evolution is critical to survival. Tbe Constitution must be an evolving document to preserve our Democratic Repu lic form of government. The last four years have clearly illustrated what happens when people live under a Constitution that has not evolved with the people. Change is difficult however necessary.
Just last night millions of Americans witnessed a lawless President tell egregious lie after lie on national television with no mechanism to check him. One of the flaws of our Constitution is that it was developed with a different moral compass. It relied on the goodwill of men. What happens when that goodwill erodes and the checks and balances of the 18th century are no longer adequate to address the venal nature of man.
We can not afford to have Judge Barrett confirmed to the US Supreme court. We must move forward with an awareness that our founders wrote a document that must be evolving with the society. The very integrity of the vision for the nation is at stake. The founders would be profoundly alarmed at efforts to suppress the vote that are becoming more pronounced in every voting cycle.
