I ran into a friend yesterday. We hadn’t seen one another for a while so we started catching up. He asked me how I was spending my time and I told him about the Deteoit New Day Community Cooperative and what we were attempting to do. He asked if we had picked up any traction and I told him the truth, people have been slow to embrace the concept. He paused for a long time and then he asked me the question.
How do I do it, how do I stay in the fight for people who are unwilling to fight for themselves. He proceeded to tell me that he’s given up on our people. He said he doesn’t have any more energy to fight a losing battle. I told him that this fight is what keeps me alive. If I just gave up my life would be over. He shook his head and asked me if I had learned anything from the Governors race four years ago. I knew what he was alluding to bit I asked him what he meant. He replied that he had been totally energized by my campaign. He had traveled with me to several campaign events in Northern Michigan. He had seen my plan for Michigan and watched audiences connect with it.
He had been with me a a thirteenth Congressional District event where multiple people who looked like me had refused to sign my nominating petition because they wanted to sign for Gretchen or El Sayed. These were people who were so beaten down that they had no faith in someone who looked like them.
I came home and I started watching the news. I found myself fascinated by the remarks of Senator Tommy Tuberville from this weekends Trump rally in a Sundown city. He didn’t hesitate or bite his tongue. He never said he was talking about black people but it couldn’t have been clearer when he through in the comment about reparations who he was talking about.
I understand my friends frustration. There are days when I feel it too. I refuse to give up. The light is on they just need to see it. No one else will do it for us. https://detroitnewday.org/
