I’m going to be a Debbie Downer today. Today across this nation people are celebrating Juneteenth. It’s now an official holiday and it means nothing. It’s an appeasement.

We can’t protect voting rights but we can give you a day to commemorate the freeing of the slaves.

America loves symbolism. The Edmond Pettus bridge is about symbolism. It was named after Edmond Pettus a former US Senator from Alabama who had been the Grand Dragon of the Klu Klux Klan. It was built in 1940 and the name was a symbol to keep black ⚫️ people in their place.

If you go to Tulsa, Oklahoma and visit what was once the Greenwood section you will see something very unusual. In what was once a residential section you will see steps. These steps appear at regular intervals and there are no homes where these steps lead to. There were once homes there but they were burned during the Tulsa Massacre of 1921. Those homes were never rebuilt. The steps remain as a reminder of what happened. That is American symbolism.

Brown v. Board of Education was symbolism. It never provided a cure for educational disparity. It just provided a symbol. It didn’t do away with seperate and unequal, it just made it necessary for people to be more creative.

I’m tired of American symbols. Making Juneteenth a national holiday is like a slap in the face. The fact that mental illness doesn’t grip every black person in America is a miracle.

You can keep Juneteenth the national holiday. I don’t need another symbol. I just need to be treated like every other human being. If you want to give me something give me that.
