I’m amazed. I just came across a post that said that Biden/Harris proves that America is not a racist country. People said the same thing when Barack Obama was elected. No election will wipe out a 400 year old American legacy. Saying that America is not racist does not make it so. The fact that we describe people based on skin melanation firmly demonstrates that the construct of race is very much a part of the fabric of this nation.
This election marks a new opportunity for America to put her past behind her. In order to do that we must first recognize that over 70,000,000 million Americans voted for Trumps xenophobia, racism, and misogyny. Those 70,000,000 million hearts and minds will not be magically transformed today. We must be prepared for a period of time where things get darker before we see the light. There must be a fundamental understanding that the economy remains broken. The pandemic continues to ravage the country. We will never return to the way things once were. We must be prepared to embrace a new world with new challenges.
We have real work in front of us. Each of us must be willing to adapt and move forward. The threat of fascism will not just fade. We will need to remain vigilant and remember what Benjamin Franklin said when asked what kind of government the founders had given us. Franklin’s reply was “A Republic If You Can Keep It”. Celebrate today and get ready for the work in front of us.
