Since he first came down the escalator in 2015 we’ve been saying that it couldn’t happen here. Since the first rallies where he gave his imitation of Mussolini and Hitler we’ve been saying that it couldn’t happen here. Since the third rate grifter took the stage to accept the GOP nomination we’ve been saying that it couldn’t happen here. Then it happened. We allowed the fox into the hen house. All of the safe guards that were suppose to provide checks on a criminal President melted away.
When he met with Putin in private without a record of the meeting being recorded we looked the other way. American hubris gave way to our darker nature. When polo shirt wearing Tiki Torch carrying descended on Charlootesville screaming we will not be replaced we refused to see the brownshirts because they weren’t wearing brownshirts. When the third rate grifter was asked to stand up for America his response was to say that there were good people on both sides. When he was told by the FBI that white hate groups represented the biggest threat in domestic terrorism it was ignored. The third rate grifter and his minions used American arrogance against us because far too many Americans believed it couldn’t happen here. We were different, we were exceptional.
We allowed the rot to slowly 🐌 eat away at everything that had held us together. When the Mueller investigation was launched instead of being sufficiently alarmed all too many Americans bought into the storyline that it was a political witch hunt. After all we are American and fascism could never take hold here. In fact believe or not we watched as our fellow Americans were fed a constant diet of Antifa the boogeyman. Soon anti fascism was America’s enemy. The same fascism we had fought against in World War II was now slowly but surely being weaved into the fabric of the nation.
In 2020 the third rate grifter was impeached. The new American Nazi party (the Republicans) refused to have a real impeachment trial. They were determined to stick with their version of a rising Hitler rather than carryout their oath of office.
From February up until the election the grifter did everything he could to thwart a free and fair election. From disrupting the mail service to saying that any election that he didn’t win was rigged he cast doubt on the legitimacy of the electoral process. Even with all of this he lost. Republicans gained seats in Congress and narrowly lost the Senate by one vote (the vote of Vice President Kamala Harris). The Grifter refused to accept defeat gracefully. Instead he perpetrated the great lie. The grifter refused to give his successor access to transition material according to established protocol. He incited Americans to challenge the incoming government and called them to Washigton to stop the election certification process. Not since 1812 had there been an attack on the Capitol. Now America was facing a threat from American insurrectionist. It had happened here. We had allowed the Star Spangled banner to be carried along side the confederate battle flag. American was fighting American at the Capitol.
The unthinkable had come to be. The grifter was impeached again and the Republicans refused to follow their oath of office.
A commision to investigate was voted on by Congress and approved. Yesterday the Senate took a vote and failed to secure the necessary votes. Fifteen Republicans slicked away from the Capitol to avoid casting a vote. Our US Senate shows us we are not who we claim to be. Republican dominated state Legislative bodies have shown us we are not who we claim to be with hundreds of new voter suppression bills. We’re not exceptional. We’re susceptible to the same forces as any other nation where the people get lazy about their government.
We are not a Democracy. We are the latest nation to turn to fascism to avoid dealing with our problems head on. President Biden and Chuck Schumer must give up on this notion of bi-partisanship if we are to have any hope of breaking this fever engulfing the nation. The filibuster is a relic of a time from the past. It is not a tool for compromise but obstruction. Time to bury it and move on. If we fail to do so the 2022 mid-term elections may well be our last. WE SAID IT COULDN’T HAPPEN HERE AND THEN IT DID.
