A failure to plan is a plan to fail. President Joseph Bidens plan for infrastructure puts the US on the right track. That plan isn’t cheap. At over two trillion dollars it would represent the largest investment in infrastructure spending since Eisenhower.
Conversely McConnell thinks that infrastructure spending should be capped at somewh where between 600 and 800 billion dollars. McConnell is just dead wrong. The risk we run in underfunding infrastructure investment is monumental. I know this because I spent 14 months investigating the infrastructure issues in my state. I live in Michigan and in 2016 I decided that I was going to run for Governor for the 2018 election. Prior to announcing my candidacy I commissioned a study to identify Michigan’s four most pressing issues.
At the top of that list was Infrastructure. Michigan desperately needed a major investment in infrastructure statewide. It wasn’t going to be cheap. Our research indicated that we need to invest at least 60 billion dollars over the next 10 years to deal with Michigan’s crumbling infrastructure. In addition to traditional infrastructure components like roads, bridges, and dams there were other things to be considered. One of those things was outdated water and sewage systems.
What happened in Flint Michigan in 2014 wasn’t an anomaly. It was in fact a clarion call that should have been a warning for the entire country. Flint was just the first it certainly won’t be the last. Detroit plays a central role in water deliver for a large segment of southeast Michigan. There are portions of that water delivery system that are 80 to 90 years old. There are portions that are still made of wood. Detroit isn’t unique. It is representative of many cities across the nation. The Flint water crisis impacted only a hundred thousand people. What happens if you have a water delivery system that serves millions fail?
We can invest in infrastructure replacement and upgrades proactively or we can postpone paying the tab until disaster strikes. You still end up paying.
The Texas flooding in 2019 as a result of the hurricane were a direct result of inadequate infrastructure. Advanced cultures don’t wait for problems to reach critical mass before they address them.
Tell McConnell and his gang of stooges to get out of the way and allow the Jobs and Infrastructure bill to pass a proposed. We either pay now or suffer later.
