If we did a better job in this country of teaching history we might not be facing a Constitutional crisis. We might have done a better job at looking at what the founders had done and been more astute in adjusting with the times.
A number of the founders believed that the Constitution was not a static document. It was aspirational and should respond with the times. If any of those men were alive today I would suspect that they would be appalled that the second amendment is interpreted as a free for all in keeping and bearing weapons. There were no mass shooting in the 18th century that did not occur on a field of battle or Massacre of indigenous people.
We are in the middle of a Constitution crisis because America fell in love with the idea of American exceptionalism. We accepted and perpetuated the idea that certain people had greater rights than others. We convinced ourselves that the arrogance and hypocrisy would never cat h up with us. We denied the possibility that unbridled greed could produce America’s very own Mussolini or Hitler. We were dead wrong.
It may prove to be too late to save this version of America. We have come to a fork in the road. I don’t think I’m being hyperbolic when I say that if the January 6th Commision fails to deliver a true measure of justice we are finished. All those people who view this as a battle between capitalism and socialism are far from the mark. If the fascist succeed the American concept will fade quickly. We will find ourselves living in an oppressive oligarchy where ordinary people are as disposable as kindling for a fire.
