I haven’t posted anything substantive for a few days. As I sit here composing this I’m not sure if I will even post it. I’m feeling a mixture of things. I’m frustrated and I’m wondering if this country is so far gone that there is no pulling it back from the brink.

Joe Biden must be convinced that centrist politics will not win the day. He must be willing to usher in dramatic change. That change begins with a tax policy that allows this nation to respond to the needs of all her citizens. When one citizen grows his personal wealth by over 50 billion dollars during a global pandemic something is very, very wrong. We cannot in any form or fashion continue to embrace a trickle down economic model.

We have 50 Democrats in the Senate and 50 Republicans in the Senate. The Republicans have demonstrated that they have no intention of supporting Democratic policy initiatives that serve the best interest of ordinary people. The Vice President is the tie breaker. Time to say goodbye to the filibuster. HR 1, tax reform, a national infrastructure program, and meaningful gun policy have no chance of seeing the light of day if the Republicans can kill progressive policy legislation through the filibuster.

The midterm elections are less than 20 months from now and the minority party can not be allowed to stagnate policy making. Democrats must have the courage to use the reins of power and demonstrate to the people that they are listening. Now there are those that will argue that HR 1 is too aggressive, that it intrudes on state sovereignty. We played with the rights of people for far too long. We cannot allow states to implement legalized voter disenfranchisement targeted to specific communities. When the Civil Rights Act of 1866 was enacted it was suppose to guarantee the rights of all men under the Constitution. Then in 1875 with the case of Minor v. Happersett the court took the position that the 14th Amendment did not guarantee anyone the right to vote. The door for Jim Croww was kicked Wide Open. The right of black people to engage in the electoral process was quashed.

Fast forward to the Civil Rights movement of the 50’s and 60’s. The Civil Rights act of 1964 and the voting rights act of 1965 once again made it possible for black people to freely engage in the political process. Then 48 years later the Supreme Court in Shelby Count v. Holder struck down Section 4(b) as unconstitutional in its June 25, 2013. Now we are witnessing the greatest attack on black suffrage since 1875. Its time to settle the question once and for all of black access to the polls. This is not a state question but a national question. States should not be able to capriciously limit access to the voting process. HR 1must come to the floor of the Senate for a vote.

In the last week we have seen two instances of mass gun violence. I’m a gun owner and I support responsible gun ownership but when 5% of the world population owns 45% of the non military weaponry in the world there is a problem.

I’ve never been a proponent of open carry. It serves no useful purpose. It is an effort to intimidate and it invites negative consequences. We need responsible legislation that balances gun rights with puic safety.

I want the folks in Washington to do what’s in the best interest of the people. Democrats were given the power by the people use it. Stop being ruled by political calculation and the desire to hold onto a position. DO THE RIGHT THING!!

THINK!!
EYES WIDE 👀 OPEN!!!
