Common sense ain’t all that common. Yesterday I got a number of responses to my analysis of the events surrounding Patrick Lyoya’s death.
Common sense dictates that no one should die because of an improper plate.
If the underlying offense you are stopped for is not designated to be criminal in nature common sense dictates that an officer should never escalate the situation into something else. Common sense ain’t all that common.
There’s been a bunch of talk about Patrick resisting arrest and attacking the officer. Patrick ran away. When he was being man handled he never struck the officer back.
Common sense ain’t so common. People have put forth the notion that the officer was attempting to detain Patrick when he first grabbed him. In order to detain someone an officer must have a “reasonable suspicion” to believe that the detained person has been involved in a crime. A civil infraction is not a crime within the meaning of the law. The operative word is reasonable. There was nothing reasonable in the officers behavior. Common sense then dictates that if there was no legitimate basis to detain him he could not have been arrested.
Common sense says that you take the keys of the car and call for a tow truck to impound it. There was absolutely no reason to give chase to Patrick other than the officers own need to exercise power over Mr. Lyoya.
Common sense was absent that day and toxic white Male masculinity was in full effect.
This wasn’t an accident. It was an intentional act. I’m weary of the victim blaming. Put the blame where it squarely belongs. Time to exercise some common sense.
Think!!
Eyes Wide Open!!!
Agreed… common sense was certainly absent in this incident.
