I’m married to the phrase “Eyes Wide Open”. We live in a world of rampant deception. It’s imperative that we see what’s happening and that we “Think” about the implications.

#BunkerbitchakaDJT reminds of the kid we all knew in school who always needed to scapegoat someone or something else for his short coming. The scapegoat I want to discuss with you now is China. Trump wants to blame China for his incompetence. Arguing about what China knew and when they knew it is an exercise in futility. China doesn’t owe the US anything.

#BunkerbitchakaDJT owes the US a reasonable and diligent response to this pandemic and he and he alone failed us miserably. Everytime any citizen buys into the China deflection we are giving Trump cover for his own short comings. The confirmed cases and the confirmed deaths from COVID-19 should be played squarely at the feet of Trump.

China isn’t the boogeyman poised to attack the US at the first opportunity. In order to understand China you have to understand how China has evolved over the last 50 years. When Deng Xiaoping came to power he knew that China had to change. When he looked at his country he saw a starving uneducated populace. Xiaoping did something that we need to study and understand. He knew that the future of China was heavily dependent on improving the educational levels of the Chinese people. He embarked on creating more educational opportunities for all Chinese.

College was made available to urban and people from the countryside. Chinese youth were encouraged to pursue education both Domestically and abroad. He never viewed study abroad as a brain drain but rather as an opportunity for Chinese students to gain western exposure and bring that knowledge back to China. To say that the focus on education has been a success is an understatement. While China is still not in the top ten globally its educational achievements have steadily closed the gap with the US. Globally the US ranks 6th with Canada ranking 1st globally.

After focusing on educational improvements Xiaoping focused on improving the economic plight of his people. He did that by allowing a slow but steady growth of none governmental business interest. It paid off by raising the average income levels of all Chinese people. Private ownership was allowed to flourish.

One of the things that we often hear in the US is that the Chinese took US jobs. The truth is the blame for the loss of US jobs needs to be laid at the feet of US CEO’s and Boards of Directors. Jobs went to China because CEO’s were interested in boosting their own compensation by reducing labor cost and driving savings to the bottomline. That was then this is now. As the standard of living goes up in China it will become ever increasingly less profitable to Manufacture in China.

China needs for standards of living to continue to have markets capable of consuming their output. In many respects this bodies well for US production because the Chinese market will continue to open up to the importation of foreign goods. I tell you this so that you don’t look at China from the perspective of the #BunkerbitchakaDJT. We need to manage the relationship and exploit the growing opportunities it represents.

Just so you know the tariffs that Trump imposed on Chinese goods was a joke. The Chinese didn’t pay a dime. The cost of these tariffs was backed in the price that the Chinese companies sold their products for. When you know better you do better.
