I’ve got a confession to make. I’m not a capitalist. This thing we call capitalism in America is a fraud. There is no pulling yourself up by your bootstraps. There is no getting ahead by virtue of working harder than everyone else. Any idea of meritocracy died out long ago. If you doubt that look around you. Trump, Mnuchin, Flynn, Manafort, and Stone are all glaring depictions of what Americas values are.
Nope I’m not a capitalist. I’m a humanist. I believe that we are our better selves when we come to the realization that we are all better when we concentrate on everyone having enough. No doubt that some will label that idea as “socialism” or social engineering. I really don’t care what label you place on it. It’s time that we really examine the circumstances of our existence.
The relief bill appears poised to be implemented. Here’s the thing it’s not a relief bill. Its a pacifier. It won’t keep a single American family from being evicted. It won’t allow them to catch up on past due utility bills. It won’t change a thing. The top earners in this country have seen a trillion dollar increase in their wealth since the beginning of the pandemic. If they were really concerned with Americas working class Joe’s they would have rolled back those ill conceived tax cuts for the super rich.
In the name of Capitalism we are now seeing wall street sell water futures. Water is life. Fully 60% of the world will be experiencing some form of water shortages by 2025. Yet the capitalist running our financial markets think its a good idea to fully commercialize water. Water is the new oil. Nope I’m not a capitalist, I’m a HUMANIST.
The father of supply side economics Ronald Reagan was an evil man. He ushered in an era of wealth concentration like we have never witnessed before. He tilted the playing field so radically that we erased the traditional middle class household.
This notion of Capitalism creates winners and losers. They play the magicians trick of getting the people to look in the direction where the action isn’t happening. In 1965 Lyndon Bain Johnson said “If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.” No truer words have ever been spoken. Since the first pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock Americas progress as come at the expense of black, brown and indigenous people. Reagan put that hatred on steroids.
I believe in evolution. I subscribe to the theory that all living things must evolve or perish. This nation is a living breathing thing. We must open our eyes and recognize that the path we are on is not sustainable. We must stop feeding the beast at the expense of the masses. Greatness is not a product of what you say but rather what you do. I am not a capitalist. I don’t need more, I need enough. I am a humanist and I don’t want to look away from my fellow humans plight.
